HIS FINGERS FLY THROUGH THE AIR WITH THE GREATEST OF EASE, THAT AMAZING KEYBOARDIST ON A PIANOWIRE TRAPEZE.

31 Mar

Keith-Emerson

Progressive rock and the entire rock n’ roll has lost one of its’ greatest progenitors of the genre a couple of Fridays ago this month. Didn’t die of cancer. No debilitating gestating disease (although, autopsy reports indicated he was heading that way whether he knew it or not). No natural causes, or being gunned down by some crazed stalking lunatic, other than himself.

No, Keyboard legend and one of my earliest teenage idols, Keith Emerson died, I’m afraid, by none other than blatant stupidity.

And I’ve seen this kind of thing personally happen in my life four times before TO BEST FRIENDS & roommates- although one was ruled accidentally and contributed to over prescribed medication fifteen years ago. I sort of looked upon that guy as a brother.

So when I hear of something contributed to suicide, I’m rather desensitized to it. I feel rather no remorse for Keith dying by his own hand. It was not a glorious way to go. Chris Squire died a noble death, he fought on to the end, and planned the legacy to go on in the capable hands of Billy Sherwood.

I have every right to feel angry and bitter after the crazy ordeal of finding my best friend Harry Perzigian in his king-sized bed drowning and bleeding in a pool of puke, excrement, and five giant industrial sized gallon sized bottles of Canadian Fine Mist beneath discarded pillows and bedspreads while puddles of blood and smashed glass laid discarded on the floor like deadly shards of eggshells.

I can only imagine it couldn’t have been any worse than his beautiful girlfriend Mari Kawaguchi to see the chaos of splattered brain matter all over floors and walls of what once held one of the most musical geniuses of our time. Sadly, I’ve read a few scathing posts about how people pointed the finger of blame towards Mari of her turning a blind eye when she revealed how moody Keith had been once he received his doctor’s prognosis. There was one idiot who accused  Mari of how she conveniently left the house to do some shopping or that she was at the other side of the condominium that they shared in Santa Monica and didn’t hear the gun go off.

I don’t expect to make a lot of friends from people reading this, so when I do eventually post this up on facebook, it’s going to on the complete down low.

But in order to write what I’m feeling about Keith, and I’ve got to be fucking brutally honest – as someone as whom I looked up to throughout my middle school and high school years;  you disappointed me. Your insecure act of cowardice no longer makes you a hero to me.

Greg Lake may not be as harsh as me, but he saw the signs according to this press release:

I have to be honest and say his death didn’t come as a shock to me,” Lake said. “The situation with Keith didn’t happen suddenly — it has been developed from as far back as ‘The Works Vol. 1’ album. At that point I began to see things happening with Keith which didn’t look or feel right.

He continued: “It’s very difficult to describe what depression is. We all know what it looks like. People’s moods become very black. But it’s more complicated. It changes someone’s personality.

“He lived, in the end, this very lonely existence of someone who was deeply troubled. I saw someone who became increasingly confused, desperate and depressed.”

Despite the fact that Emerson‘s girlfriend said the musician was “tormented with worry” over how his degenerative disease affected his playing ability, Lake doesn’t believe that was the main reason behind his decision to end his life.

Lake said: “I’m sure that was a component — but a lot of people are given bad news like that, and you don’t take your life because of it.

“If anyone does have feelings of being so desperate that they think it’s better off not to wake up tomorrow, please talk to somebody. The doctor, your friend, anybody.

“Talk to them and tell them what state you’re in. If Keith had taken that path, he might still be here today.”

The whole thing is just senseless. At 72, things are expected to turn against you. Doesn’t mean that your career in music comes to a immediate halt. I would have gone through the tour, no matter painful or embarrassing it might have turned out. Turned around to the press and announced, ‘hey, that’s it. My flare for performing is over and from now on, I’m going to conduct symphonies’. There was so much Emerson could have contributed to the music world without the use of playing rigorously everyday.
I mean, come on, it’s what Tony Banks is doing these days.
I made my own observation, having running into Keith Emerson at a few shows in the Los Angeles area here and there:

‘I knew something was a kind of off-kilter when I saw you try to walk around anonymously throughout the intermission crowd of the last Asia concert when they played here in Los Angeles back in 2014. You were skulking around the lobby bar acting distant, trying to sip your drink and rebuffing requests for pictures or autographs. I knew you were there to lend your support for your brother in arms, Carl Palmer. It’s not the first time, I’ve seen you at a Asia concert. I once stood next to you taking a piss at a urinal over the reunion of the original four concert up in Canyon Country.

Don’t worry man, I assure you, I didn’t look down at your dick.

HA! That’s something that Harry would say.

BUT What was up with those ruffle shirt and purple sunglasses? Where you there to audition for a remake of Austin Powers or to see a concert?’

I didn’t get to see Emerson, Lake, and Palmer in their heyday during the seventies. When they went on that huge money hemorrhaging tour in support of Works Volume 1, my mom and step dad declared me too young to go to the city by myself at age of thirteen. I had got to see Paul McCartney & Wings with my stepfather’s friend the year previously, but that same friend was unfortunately not a big fan of ELP. I didn’t get the full ensemble until the 1992 Black Moon tour at San Diego State University’s Open Air Theater.

However does seeing Emerson, Lake, & Powell or 3 with Robert Berry count?

All three times in San Diego.

The closest that ELP ever came to me while growing up was recanted to me by an old neighbor of mine in Parsippany, NJ while I was partying with him one weekend night at the Jersey City Reservoir (I still remember him wearing that infernal Yes Going for The One tour t-shirt- one I would’ve paid to get the shirt off his back), that the band was once within earshot of us when their tourbus made a pit stop at a local pizzeria called Morreli’s in the Lake Hiawatha area of town. He had passed by a small flash mob scene of them signing autographs and eating pizza.

And not of them took a selfie?

Where Morelli's Italian Restaurant used to stand in Lake Hiawatha, NJ. Emerson, Lake, & Parlor once stopped here on their way to set up for their Works tour at Madison Square Garden in 1977. It's now a funeral parlor.

Where Morelli’s Italian Restaurant used to stand in Lake Hiawatha, NJ. Emerson, Lake, & Parlor once stopped here on their way to set up for their Works tour at Madison Square Garden in 1977. It’s now a funeral parlor.

Oh yeah, I nearly forgot there weren’t any iphones back then.

Believe it or not, there is a Harry Perzigian connection here. Cozy Powell used Harry’s Brentwood pad as his American base (Harry had once auditioned to be the drummer for Richie Blackmore’s Rainbow, but lost the gig to Cozy Powell, but they became fast friends) when he wasn’t living in England.

Cozy asked Harry for his opinion on whether he should the gig.

Harry said definitely ‘of course, you’d be stupid not to.’

12 years later on, it didn’t end well for Cozy either. During the time I roomed with Harry, I got passed down some of Cozy’s LA wardrobe that he left behind.

I’m sorry, I’m presenting this blog to you half-assed, but at the moment, I’ve been working on a memorial piece on the co-creator of Logan’s Run and fabled screenwriter George Clayton Johnson for this year’s Comic Con International’s souvenir book that’s taking more precedent, but allow me to say this: Keith Emerson left us with work unfinished, and it’s just selfish and unjustifiable on how he decided to end it, because of something THAT could’ve been worked out with some deep analysis and discussion. There were plenty of other alternatives and avenues to further explore.

There’s something I find baffling with the autopsy report: how the hell does a medical examiner determine that one suffers from depression after examining a body? That sounds something straight out of a cancelled Minority Report episode.

I’m happy to hear that Carl Palmer is going to put together a little farewell tour in honor of Keith, that’s his comrade-in-arms, him, along with Greg has supported each other’s separate musical journeys since the many or so break-ups.

If it the tour stops here, it’s going to be a flip of a coin on whether I’ll be in the mood to support it.

THE MIGHTY MIDSEASON SUPER HERO SHOW SHOWDOWN

I love television show ratings. I really do. But I know most of you don’t give a shit. I have a foresworn duty to swat most of you upside the head with a Nielsen people meter measuring box every weekend on my facebook page cajoling the winners and losers of the OVERNIGHT COMIC BOOK SHOW SECRET RATINGS WAR SWEEPSTAKES with the proliferation of television shows that are conquering our broadcast television, cable, and streaming platform airwaves of late. Since it’s a very important month in advertising measurement, February sweeps – the other three being, the November and May sweeps, and July (although no one really gives a shit who watches what in July, because we’re reeling from all the scoops from the Upfronts and Television Critic Association summits and need to catch our breath from all the comic convention attending I thought I would reprint the past four weeks of my snarky reporting derring do – specifically doing mash ups of how the comic book shows pitch against each other for ratings supremacy. I thought I would include, exclusively for this blog, the L + 3 and L + 7 shifted viewings as well.

Still to premiere at the time of this posting Wynonna Earp (Syfy- April 1st), Outkast (Cinemax- June), Preacher (AMC – May 22 immediately after the Walking Dead finale), Marvel’s Luke Cage (ABC & Netflix – Fall 2016) , the second seasons of Marvel’s Daredevil (ABC & Netflix March 18th) & Powers (Sony Playstation), and fingers crossed that the pilots of Riverdale, based on the newly revamped versions of the Archie comics characters and Scalped (WGN), based on the Jason Aaron created comic book once published by DC/Vertigo gets the series go ahead.

daredevil-season-21

Both Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.(ABC) & Gotham (Fox) are not covered in these reports because they were both on winter hiatus during the month of February, so that Marvel’s Agent Carter & the revival of X-Files could run in their stead. I will be covering their measurement performance in my next installment which will cover the period of the May sweeps running roughly from the end of April to the middle of May later on in the year.

Here is just a gander of all this month’s weekly overnight rounds. These have been reprinted from my facebook posts usually on a Sunday before embarking on my laborious task of cramming them all into one painful eye straining viewing session. Please note: I have a tendency to be especially snarky towards the ABC Network version of Marvel shows, rest assured it’s just a veneer I like to exhibit towards my facebook friends who take these shows way too seriously, especially Gregg Clark’s starring vehicle of SHIELD which includes nearly the whole cast who are NOT technically based on existing Marvel characters (people constantly gripe about me comparing them as the new Mutant X, which was also a Marvel production based on non comic book canon mutant characters). I enjoy watching them, but I don’t think they are just professional looking and cohesive as the way Greg Berlanti handles the DC Universe CW based shows.

COMIC BOOK SHOW SECRET RATINGS WARS SWEEPSTAKES CONTINUE: (all in the overnights round) posted February 7, 2016.

Yeah, yeah, so it’s the Super Bowl, but since I absolutely abhor American ‘male ass grab ball between your thighs’ I’ll try to make this as anally painless as possible. So I’ll be light on the banter this week since I’m literally watching them as I speak. All information researched from zapittvbythenumbers.com

SPECIAL COMIC BOOK SHOW SECRET RATING WARS SWEEPSTAKES CONTINUE – THE VALENTINE’s DAY MASSACRE EDITION.

Well, taken in consideration on how well the Deadpool movie is doing – ‘the R rated movie secretly disguised as a G rated movie’ – the small screen battleground wasn’t really that controversial – most of our contestants held pretty steady from last week with two exceptions:

The X-Files” (2.5), which remained the night’s No. 1 show despite slipping a tenth from last week’s fast nationals (it adjusted up in the finals) Because of that slippage Lucifer” (1.7) also fell for FOX and cursed us with a 5 share for a hypnotising total of 5.47 million viewers.

However, “Supergirl” 1.8’s shiny red panties and brown pantyhose helped improved week to week, growing by 0.3 for CBS. It had a 6 share and a total 7.92 million viewers.

The Flash” (CW) sped to a season-high 1.6 rating in adults 18-49 Tuesday, finishing second in its hour. It clocked in with a 5 share and a gale force windy total of 3.96 million viewers “iZombie” lowered her brain eating appetite a tenth with last week’s fast nationals for The CW for a malnourished 2 share of 1.43 million viewers.

Speaking of someone who’s sorely in need of eating out, Hayley Atwell’s in Marvel’s “Agent Cunnilingus” held steady from last week’s unimpressive  0.8 18-49 rating with a 2 share and a total of 2.66 not impressed million viewers. It’s doubtful that this show will great a third season renewal – instead of bring in another crappy SHIELD spin-off show called “Marvel’s Most Wanted” in its’ place which will more than likely perform even worse.

Arrow (The CW) held its’ CUPID aim steady for 0.9 18-49 rating and 3 shared and a targeted 2.44 million viewers.

And finally,“Legends of Tomorrow” was even with last week’s time travel dip of 0.9 18-49 rating with a 3 share and a total of 2.39 million viewers.

THIS WEEK’S COMIC BOOK SECRET RATINGS WAR SWEEPSTAKES CONTINUE!!

One contestant Supergirl was eliminated from this week’s award show season herculean competition. BUT the reigning champion OVERALL, THE WALKING DEAD made its’ mammoth mid-season kill comeback, but with less considerable strength than usual.

“The return of “The Walking Dead” shot AMC to the top of the cable rankings for Sunday, but the show came back with slightly smaller numbers.”

I just fucking said that.

Sunday’s midseason premiere drew a 6.8 rating in adults 18-49 and 13.74 million viewers. That’s down from both the final episode of 2015 (7.0, 13.98 million) and the Season 5b debut in February 2015 (8.0, 15.64 million).

“Though its numbers were down a bit, “The Walking Dead” was far and away the No. 1 show on cable for the week of Feb. 8-14. The series returned to AMC with a 6.8 rating in adults 18-49 and 13.74 million viewers.” For more seven day numbers, I will be posting a special PURPLE PINUP GURU blog at the tail end of this month to examine most of these high roller competitions.

The worthless Grammys (you call that music, kids?) also put the hurt on a few other shows. “The X-Files” fell 0.4 week to week FOX’s “Lucifer,” however, held up reasonably well, dipping only a tenth of a point vs. last week.

Lucifer (FOX) Monday hellraised a 1.6 Adults 18-49 with a 4 share and a dominion full of 5.13 million viewers.

For some reason, the CW ran another unannounced encore of Legends of Tomorrow. ZIPPO word of mouth about that episode only whipped up a time portal to the past Legends of Tomorrow (The CW monday) – R of a 0.2 a 1 share and a total 0.65 handful of viewers.

Lower viewing on Tuesday (debate somewhere perhaps or a basketball game being played in chicago perhaps) meant “iZombie” was adjusted down to 0.5 in the finals.

The Flash” (1.5) despite as being hyped as pivotal episode (second of a two parter from last week) fell a tenth vs. last week. A double helping of “Agent Crabcrotch” on ABC scored 0.7 for each hour, down from last week’s 0.8 – which puts in serious danger of cancellation if numbers don’t improve in the L+3 or the L+7 championship.

The Flash (The CW Tuesady) sprinted a modest 1.5 Adults 18 – 49 with 5 share and a total pulsating speed force of 3.90 million viewers.

iZombie (The CW Tuesday) lost its’ brain eating appetite to 0.5 Adults 18-49 with a 2 share and a reguritation bile of 1.25 million viewers.

Marvel’s Agent Crabcrotch (ABC Tuesday) contracted a double dose of (9-11 p.m.) 0.7 infected STDs amongst Adults 18-49 and a 2 share and a herpes test result of 2.39 million little viruses found in your underwear.

Arrow (The CW Wednesday) was a even steady aim of 0.9 Adults 18-49 with a 3 share and a total 2.44 viewers not really watching with a suspenseful lump in ther throat.

And finally, “DC’s Legends of Tomorrow” (The CW Thursday) a one tenth time turd to a 0.8 Adults 18-49 rating with a 3 share and a total of 2.25 million who forgot to turn on the on button to their time travel mobile hand devices.

For the week of FEBRUARY 28th 2016

THIS WEEK’s COMIC BOOK SHOW SECRET RATINGS WAR SWEEPSTAKES CONTINES!!

The Walking Dead” stayed on top of Sunday’s cable rankings, and stayed pretty much on par with its winter premiere. The show was down 0.2 in adults 18-49 week to week (6.8 vs. 6.6), a scant 3 percent decline.

WALKING DEAD AMC 9:00 PM SUNDAY 13,483 in 000 total viewers and a 6.6 Adults 18-49.

The X-Files” rose 0.3 to finish its short season with a 2.4. It was the top scripted show of the night but “Lucifer” (1.5) dipped two tenths for FOX with a 4 share and a total 4.86 million satanish watching viewers.

After taking last week off for the Grammys, Supergirl returned lower to a (1.5) Adults 18-49 with a 5 share and a total of 7.25 million upskirt watching viewers.

For the second week in a row, Tuesday was not a very big night for the broadcast networks.“iZombie” (0.6) Adult 18-49 currently sits ahead of its final number from a week ago iZombie (The CW) with a 2 share and a total of 1.45 undead turning viewers. But that’s it for improvements.

The Flash” (1.4) (The CW) Adults 18-49 dipped a tenth with a 5 share and a limping 3.80 million total viewrs

There was but one change from Tuesday’s early ratings to the final numbers. ABC’s Marvel’s “Agent Cocksucker” adjusted up 0.1 in adults 18-49 to a 0.8 (9-11 p.m.) a 2 sharea and a total 2.50 million viewers, up a tenth from last week.

Wild-card “Arrow” (1.0) rose a tenth on (The CW) in Adults 18-49 to a 3 share and a justifible leaguing total of 2.70 million viewers.

Arrow related events also help Legends of Tomorrow (The CW) rise a tenth to 0.9 in Adults 18-49 and a 3 share to a 2.47 dimensional hopping million viewers

Also I’ve been keeping track of both DVR measurements. There are two kinds of delayed viewing: one is L+3 which is the third day beyond the initial broadcast with commercials still included. The second of which I’m partially guilty of myself, since I tend to watch all my comic book related shows on a Sunday afternoon while I’m posting the overnight battles is L+7 which is seven days and more beyond the initial viewing. Commercials may or may not be included, as your mileage may vary depending on how generous the network feels in making your life easier to navigate your remote through them.

I stream all my shows through either a network app such as the CW – when I’m not in a rush to plow through them, BUT when I have seven or eight of these super powered soaps lined up in a row, I may consider watching them on my hulu app – because my attention span really strains itself after either SHIELD or iZombie, and fatigue will set in, and since they boast of fewer commercials, I succumb to a Hulu+ subscription with the exception of CBS All Access, which I had no choice to subscribe to, if I want to watch the latest Supergirl, but their service is terrible for the $6.00 a month that they finagle out of my checking account every month. I have more problems buffering through them then I would through Netflix or hulu. I plan on suspending my subscription once the Supergirl finale is downloaded. I’m not a real big fan of their septuagenarian or octogenarian demo aimed programming, except maybe I will check out the new Star Trek when they start streaming that puppy.

So here’s what I’ve gathered from the L+3 ratings. Notice that they are four categories of measurement and they’re only the shows that happen to crack the list of the first top twenty-five shows broadcasted.

For THE WEEK of FEBUARY 8-14

The Walking Dead’s” midseason premiere was down slightly from its last episode of 2015 in the same-day ratings. Turns out people just needed some time to catch up.

The AMC hit improved from a 6.8 rating in adults 18-49 to a 9.6 after three days of delayed viewing, moving ahead of the 9.3 for its last episode in Live +3. It was far and away the No. 1 show in the demo for Feb. 8-14, cable or broadcast.

None. Why? Because most of these shows listed flourished better in the overnights. Walking Dead, Flash, Supergirl, and now Lucifer could now officially be declared as ‘appointment television’. Listen, it’s all great if you enjoy saving up your favorites and binge watch a whole shitload of your shows. BUT these shows are allowed on broadcast for one reason and one reason only – TO SELL ADVERTISING. And if no one is seeing the ads then everyone involved from the production crew, to the talents, to the marketing department putting together those colorful eye candy billboards and bus shelter poster is going to suffer budget concerns  if no one sees the advertising. Advertisers don’t give a fuck about your binge watching habits. IF YOU FULLY support a show – YOU WATCH IT WHEN IT PREMIERES AND BUY THE SHIT UP TOMORROW- otherwise, take it to Netflix, hulu, or Amazon Prime where advertising is non-existent and it goes directly to greedy little content posting elves who will gladly swipe your credit or debit card for a small pittance each and every month.

“The Walking Dead” remained cable’s No. 1 show for the week of Feb. 15-21, drawing numbers on par with its winter premiere the previous week. The series scored a 6.6 in adults 18-49, down 0.2 week to week, and 13.48 million viewers, off just slightly from the previous week’s 13.74 million.

So what in the hell happened with Agent Carter, Arrow, Legends of Tomorrow? They all had strong solid performances, especially on the first week of the month? Well, as it happens – everything got pushed back because of the Grammys, Oscars, and all the nauseating town halls and debates that you can eat- pushing all those series with the exception of Flash and Lucifer holding steady throughout downward. Lucifer’s renewed by Fox is almost a certainly – provided that its’ X-Files lead in comes back next season. Believe it or not, since I’m polishing off this article in the middle of March, Gotham’s fraction of a rating compared to the X-Files has diminished Lucifer’s holding to the newcomer crown by roughly 20 – 30%. However, it’s quickly developed a loyal fan base and pretty much are tuning in to see how it turns out in the end.

L+7 Section

The debut of “Lucifer” on FOX was among the biggest gainers in the Live +7 ratings for the final week of January.

The show added 1.4 points in adults 18-49, rising from 2.4 to 3.8 and tying with “The Blacklist” for the second-biggest jump of the week. “The X-Files” led with a 1.9-point improvement (3.2 to 5.1) and was also the top show in viewers added (+4.71 million).

I decided to eliminate Walking Dead out of this competition. They repeat all the episode ad nauseam at all hours of the day and it seems every time there’s a mid-season finale or a season finale, they’ll just run every episode in a marathon just to reach that point when that finale episode debuts. What would be the point?

Now begins the fireworks. I apologize for not knowing how to download a spreadsheet on this blog.

So there you have it. In total overall viewership, Lucifer and Legends of Tomorrow are soaring high in their delayed viewing platforms and are definitely on the road to second season renewal success, and although Agent Carter gains some new ground in these categories, the show doesn’t sustain that much growth in viewership. It will either be a slim pubic hair’s chance of renewal or it will be done so out of pity due to the crazy presidential debates and town hall meetings on all the major cable news networks.

In two weeks, I will return with my thoughts on the tragic death of Keith Emerson. It won’t bode well for most of you ELP fans (myself included).
